| Akira Nishimura's “Heterophony of Two Pianos and Orchestra” proved not only the best piece on the program but a knockout by any standards I know. Aki Takahashi and Frederic Rzewski(the latter a fine composer himself) were the two pianists and they hammered, rattled, splashed and gonged their way through the difficult score with extraordinary virtuosity.
The opening movement is essentially a study in repeated fifths, augmented by unusual orchestration and flashy ornamentation from the two pianos. The second movement is marked by a fluttering, ethereal sonic delicacy - New Age with brains - and the “Heterophony” concludes with a wild, whiz-bang kaleidoscopic jangle that brought down the house. Here, finally, was music both visceral and specific, sounding all the better after so much vagueness.
I hope Foss,Rzewski and Takahashi record it. Time PAGE
