HIRAYOSHI, Takekuni

平吉毅州

(1936.7.10-1998.5.28)

Born in Kobe, 1936. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in composition in 1961 and studied under Yoshio Hasegawa while in school. Won the Mainichi Music Competition in 1962 for the category of orchestral composition. Completed his graduate studies at the same university in 1967. Awarded the Otaka Prize in 1970. Was a professor at Toho Gakuen School of  Music. Died in 1998.
Notable works: Symphonic Variations; Epitaph for Strings; Requiem for Violin and Orchestra; Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra; <Umi no aru Fūkei> for Timpani and Orchestra; collection of compositions for children <Niji no Rhythm> and <Minami no Kaze>; mixed chorus works <Yume>, <Sora ni Kotori ga inaku natta hi>, and <Umi no Fushigi>; and Suite for Male Chorus <Sasurai no Funaji>, among others.
