CHEN, Jingyu

Jingyu Chen is a composer whose music explores timbre, colour, and subtle processes of transformation.  Her work creates poetic, shimmering sound worlds shaped by delicate timbral detail, nuanced orchestration, and a sensitivity to light, resonance, and the passage of time.
She was awarded First Prize in the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2024 for her orchestral work Nebula. Praising the work, composer and jury chair Mark-Anthony Turnage described it as “very beautifully scored” and “quite moving.” Additional honours include the winner of Homerton Composing Competition Award (2022) and 2nd Prize in the III International Competition of Composers “New Music Generation” (2021). For 2026–27, she has been selected as a Britten Pears Young Artist.
Jingyu has collaborated with conductors including David Alan Miller and Yoichi Sugiyama, and her music has been performed internationally by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Albany Symphony musicians, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Riot Ensemble, Fidelio Trio, The Manchester Contemporary Youth Opera, and members of the BBC Singers. Her works have been broadcast on NHK Radio in Japan and featured at festivals including the American Music Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, New Music Northwest Festival, Manchester Science Festival, and 8³ New Music & Science.
Jingyu completed her PhD in Composition at the University of Cambridge in 2026.
