ODA, Miyuko
小田実結子(1994.2.23-)
Born in Tokyo, Miyuko Oda attended Musashino Academia Musicae, from where she obtained her first and second academic degrees, studying composition with Yukio Nozaki and Seiichi Satō and piano with Yoshimi Nagahori, Tomonori Kōsaka and Tamayo Oka.
She was awarded the Encouragement Prize in the chamber music category at the 21st All-Japan Composers Competition sponsored by Tokyo International Association of Artists (TIAA), and was a prize-winner and recipient of the Audience Prize at the Trombone Piece of the Year 2017 event sponsored by the Japan Association of Trombonists. She was awarded second prize in the composition category at the 24th Sōgakudō Japanese Song Competition together with the Yoshinao Nakada Prize and the Ryōsuke Hatanaka Prize. She was also awarded second prize in the 25th competition and a work by her was featured at the 27th competition in this same series.
She gained first prize for a piece entitled Dawn (Yoake in its Japanese title) in the junior high school band composition category in the Barbara Buehlman Prize for Composition sponsored by Midwest Clinic. This work was first performed by the US Army Field Band at the 75th Midwest Clinic.
A work by her was selected for inclusion in the 1st New Work Challenge Project held to mark the 20th anniversary of the Children’s Regular Concert Series sponsored by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Suntory Hall. This work was premiered in December 2021 by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra under Keitarō Harada.
Her work for wind band entitled Iwai no En (Feast) was selected for inclusion in the 24th event in the ‘21st-Century Wind Band Kyō-En’ series.
Her orchestral work Olive Crown was commissioned by Kazuki Yamada, who first performed it in March 2023 at the Kitara Concert Hall in Sapporo with the Yokohama Sinfonietta.
Miyuko Oda is a part-time lecturer at Musashino Academia Musicae and is also a member of the All-Japan Association for the Creation of Children’s Songs."
