- Description
-
I composed this piece in the summer of 2013 in response to a commission from the Sasayama Wind Band,an amateur band based in the city of TambaSasayama in Hyogo Prefecture. It was first performed under the baton of Takashi Obana at the band’s 30th regular concert on 7 December 2013.
The piece is based on Dekansho-bushi,a folk song much loved in the Sasayama region. The melody of this song appears eleven times throughout the piece, played at different tempos and by different combinations of instruments in the manner of a set of variations. The various appearances of the melody of Dekansho-bushi are as follows:
1,from bar 1:Played quietly by euphoniums after a fanfare.
2,from bar 6:Played quietly by saxophones also following a fanfare.
3,from bar 28:Played forthrightly by trumpets and horns.
4,from bar 50: Played by woodwinds.
5,from bar 65: Played by horns and woodwinds.
6,from bar 85: Played slowly and leisurely by woodwinds.
7,from bar 133:Played brilliantly by brass.
8,from bar 169:Played slowly and leisurely by clarinets and solo flute.
9,from bar 177:Played again at a fast tempo by horns.
10,from bar 182:Played by muted trumpets and trombones.
11,from bar 198:Played at a faster tempo by the whole band.
