EDGE for String Quartet（2011）

This piece is divided into two parts. The first part is a movement in which the traditional aesthetic concept of ma，the dynamic interaction of sound and silence，alternates with piercing vertical sound textures. Ma is realised here through the medium of whole bar rests. The silences are gradually filled in with a succession of piercing vertical sound events as the music acquires a sense of continuity.
The second part features an accumulation of brief linear elements formed from glissandi of varying lengths which are realised not in a rectilinear manner but analogously to the sweeping upstrokes (harai) employed in Japanese calligraphy. Their accumulation results in a sense of sonic fluctuation out of which melodic elements gradually emerge.
