- Description
-
I composed this piece in December 2017 for performance at concert held to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of my professional career.
I was enchanted by the sound of Dai Miyata’s cello when he appeared as a guest on a TV programme I was presenting. He graciously accepted my offer to write a piece for him and subsequently gave the piece its first performance.
The title DAIM is taken from Dai Miyata’s name, and the motif D-A-A-E that appears in the piece is also based on this title. The motif appears at the start of the piece played by the piano, after which it is taken up and repeated by the solo cello in a totally new guise.
The central section employs the same material as the music moves into a warm major tonality. The earlier material then reappears with the incorporation of hectic double-stopping as the piece enters its final section.
