Description
This piece was commissioned early in 2021 by Shōichirō Hokazono, who presented me with the difficult task of composing a ‘profound work’ for euphonium and piano.
I worked on the piece with the concept in mind of gazing out on the sea and pondering its colouring and depth and attempting to realise this concept through the medium of the rich tone of the euphonium.
The title means ‘wave patterns’ in reference to the subtle reflections of light on the sea surface. I also had in mind the intricate wave patterns that appear on twilled fabric.
I lost a much revered teacher at around this time and I composed this piece in a spirit of gratitude while struggling with a sense of loss as I looked out onto the sea that my teacher so loved.
