Description
This is the seventeenth piece I have composed in the series ‘Music Based on 3D Modelling’ that I began working on in 2018. The concept underlying this series is the exploration of ways in which visual and spatial data structures in the form of three-dimensional models can be applied as the generative principle behind musical time and acoustic structuring.
The work takes the form of five pieces played without a break. Various instrumental combinations are possible so as to allow for adaptation to the conditions of a particular performance. In the fifth piece, with the aim of bringing out the individuality of the performer, I have tried to incorporate improvisation, a feature not present in any prior works in the 3D modelling series and one that I became aware of when looking back on the list of my previous compositions. In this sense the present work may well constitute a turning point in my creative development. My aim in this piece is to see how the indeterminate character of improvisation can be made to coexist with determinate structures based on 3D modelling.
The concepts of free choice of instruments and incorporation of improvisational elements were nurtured through prior discussions with the percussionist Takafumi Fujimoto. His outstanding musicianship and flexible creativity intertwined with the musical space designed on the basis of 3D modelling in this series, resulting in the attempt to generate a new form of musical expression based on collaboration between composer and performer.
