- Description

I composed this piece for performance at the St. Valentine’s Day concert given by Nobuya Sugawa on 14 February 2026. Although its underlying theme is ‘love’, it does not attempt to relate a specific love story or represent a specific relationship. My aim has been to create a piece of music that would enable listeners to overlay the music with their own memories and emotions and to freely depict their own particular stories as if viewing a movie in a cinema. It was for this reason that I entitled the work Le cinéma.
The work is intended to trace the passage of the varied emotional experiences that most of us have probably undergone since we were born down to the present day. The light and the shade of our lives melt into the maelstrom of memory, and the piece concludes with a powerful and lyrical surge of emotion. I will leave any further development of the narrative up to the imagination of the listener.
The story that thus arises will represent the conclusion of Le cinéma.
