Description
This work is expected to be performed by brass bands regardless of whether they are professional or amateur. It takes on the character of educational work that is rare among my works. This means that I had to tackle a mixed and difficult task to make the musical content relatively easy to understand even for amateur players and yet,at the same time,by no means superficial but fulfilling even for professional players.
Based on the rhythm of march, which is well-worn in wind music, appears direct quotations of motifs from the second movement Jeux de vagues of Debussy’s La mer and the second movement Des Helden Widersacher of Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben. These motifs many classical music lovers are familiar with come out in totally different situations. In this way,I aimed to produce moments where contexts shared by many people are defamiliarized. In addition, harmonies in this work are deformed by chromatic scales and,as techniques of orchestration,fade-in and fade-out are used. With these characteristics including defamiliarization noted above,I named this work DETUNE. The original meaning of this word is to make a sound thicker by untuning slightly.
