R?miniscence / Polymonophonie is an inherited piece of Monopolyphonie / D?figuration for chello solo written in 2014. The melody of the Sarabande from J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites No.5 is used as a common motif in the two pieces, which are like twins. While the motif expands to the maximum in Monopolyphonie / D?figuration,it converges to the contrary in R?miniscence / Polymonophonie. I introduced contrapuntal techniques such as countermelody, episodes and stretto in Monopolyphonie / D?figuration. On the other hand,I composed R?miniscence / Polymonophonie with a theme and 19 variations in which episodes are inserted. (Contrary to the classical variation form, the theme appears at the last of the piece.)
The sarabande as a main motif seems to be a simple melody, but it is a monophony which induces polyphony with unique interval relationships. The analysis of the melody led to a search for the two different concepts of Monopolyphonie and Polymonophonie, and two works inextricably linked to each other were born. Only by changing the order of the prefixes, totally different works were produced; in the first one,a single melody induces the possibility of plural melodies, and in the second one, plural melodies converges into a single melody.
This work was dedicated to Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi who played it for the first time.
