SPACE AND REALITY is a companion work to ESPACE / VISION for horn and trumpet which I composed in 1996. Inspired by the intimate dance of two people in Futari Shizuka [The Two Shizukas],a play of Japanese classical musical drama of Noh,I wrote ESPACE / VISION as a musical representation of the transition and interplay between fiction and reality. In contrast,in SPACE AND REALITYⅠ attempted to represent an existence per se as an objective reality without any meaning or reason as well as any physical image. The technical feature of this work is based on the mechanism and properties of the flute. The relationship among registers, timbres, and fundamental tones of flute family instruments acts as a central axis of musical structure giving rise to discontinuities among sections and affecting rhythmic structures and pitch organizations. In addition, the pulse that penetrates the work provides continuity as well. Therefore the composition is to have continuity and discontinuity at the same time presenting a kind of paradox.
