Strata' is a plural noun of 'Stratum' which is meaning a layer. I have been using this word as a title of my works of which they have the core related with 'compass',such as Strata I for string quartet (1988),Ⅱ for flute (1988),Ⅲ for clarinet and piano (1989),Ⅳ for oboe and doublebass (1994) and Ⅴ for string quartet (1995). However, all these pieces has no particular common methodology or system together. I had been rather avoided such thoughts. Consequently,an approach of individual piece is not the same, although they have a similar title.
Among the musical instruments,an existence of the trombone is interested in for me that the instrument is used in the domain of alto on a certain occasion, and on the other cases it is used as tenor,or bass. Moreover, this instrument has no old fashion, although it is one of the oldest one within the history of brass instruments.
In this piece,'Strata Ⅵ',the trombone proves his an able knowledge, namely, his great compass as well as the sections strata are proved. Individual section points out their various characters as though individual time shows it in the whole history. The piano discharges his duties to be an emphasis for turn and move the strata. As for me,this piece was the second chamber music for brass instrument, since 'Elephant Rhetorics' for tuba and piano, composed in 1992.
