I believe that music is the act of giving form to the subtle vibrations that arise between the conscious and the unconscious.
When I am engaging with a composition, there are moments when two voices are born within me.
One is the conscious voice of my everyday life, and the other is the unconscious voice rising from within a dream.
Only when these two voices meet and overlap, I feel that my “own sound” takes shape.
A dream is a place where layers of the soul(心 heart? spirit?) that usually lie hidden appear.
It is a place where fragments of emotion suppressed by social roles and constraints of thinking lurk quietly.
In the process of composition, I came to think that perhaps a new path will open up by picking up the scenes I see in dreams and bringing it into the consciousness.
The Conscious and the Unconscious
Symphony No. 1 was born from trying to walk that fine line.
By moving back and forth between the conscious and the unconscious and searching the depths of the soul, the four movements took shape.
The first movement is the determination to delve deep within oneself.
The second movement portrays the soul hovering between dream and reality.
The third movement is a reminiscence of the carefree spirit of my childhood.
The fourth movement is the continuing journey of self-discovery and the desire to discover a new self.
Ten years since the premiere, I, too, am constantly changing.
However, listening to the boundary between the conscious and the unconscious is still at the core of my creative work.
I would be happy if this work could serve as a small light to illuminate the inner voice of each listener.
